Life on The Screened Porch

Here Greetings from the screened on porch!  Phoebe and I have enjoyed quite a bit of time out here this weekend.
It has been overcast, so the temperature has been perfect.

I was able to complete a shawl I have been working on for quite awhile.  And even though I was getting a bit burnt out on it, once I finished I was glad I kept pushing on.

What do you think?  It is such squishy yarn.  I didn't realize how big it would work up once I started.  I do like the pattern.  I does have short rows in it, but they really aren't too bad and they just make the shape come out perfectly.  You can find the pattern at
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lina-5  It is a free ravelry download.

Here is the back.  I love how this yarn stripes.  For anyone interested, I used a size 4 circular needle and the yarn is Lion Brand Tween Stripes, Mixed Berry.  I used almost five skeins.

I think this would also be a great party to use up all those scraps!!!  And you could easily work it up and stockinet the stitch as well.

I leave you now with wishes for a good week!!  We are in the midst of summer here!!  Phoebe is enjoying it so far!

Extraordinary Kid {make your own video!}

In a few weeks I am going to have a 10 year old! I cannot believe my oldest will be in the double digits. That makes me feel pretty old, but at the same time I am so happy with how much he has learned and grown over the years. It is something extraordinary to watch your kids develop and mature and see who they become.

Of course I think my kid is extraordinary. He is such a great big brother to my two other boys and he is so caring towards others as well. He is also smart, funny, and very responsible. He loves music as much as I do and we always have fun listening to songs and rocking out in the car together. He is the only one of my kids who will shamelessly give me a smooch whenever I ask, and I hope that never changes as he continues to get older! I am so proud of the young man he is becoming and all that he has accomplished so far.

I wanted to celebrate his 10 years with a special video for him on the Stanford Children's health site.  Stanford Children’s Health and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford has been the top-ranked children’s hospital in Northern California for over a decade.
It is so fun to look back over the years and remember the great memories we have made so far! You can take a peak at my video here.

What makes your kid extraordinary isn’t just the epic stuff. It’s the little things. The small moments that maybe only you see — and quietly celebrate every day.

Your kid is extraordinary. Show them how much you enjoy every moment together by creating a special video of your own! I know they would love to see and hear the love you have for them and what you think makes them extraordinary. It is a great way to celebrate your kids!

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Welcome to Montana on the AMB Blog Tour

Welcome to my stop along the American Made Brand blog hop tour.  I share with you the state I call home ... Montana.

When I first thought of developing my AMB block, I wanted to start by taking a look at Montana license plate designs ... however, after discovering that Montana has more than three times as many specialty license plates as other states in the region ...

I decided I'd best design my block with my own ideas!

So, with that in mind, I give you a brief tour of my state with the hope of showing you what inspired my block:

I took this photo last month at the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge just south of where I live.
Montana's name is derived from the Spanish word montaña (mountain) and, living in the western part of the state ... you truly see mountains in every direction ...  a total of 77 named ranges are part of the Rocky Mountains.

Montana represents the untamed, the wild, and the natural.

Of course, with fifteen ski areas for winter recreation ....

We have plenty of reason to get out and enjoy the natural splendor in cold weather also.

Montana contains thousands of named rivers and creeks, 450 miles (720 km) of which are known for "blue-ribbon" trout fishing.  In 1992 the Robert Redford directed movie "A River Runs Through It,"  extensive fishing scenes were filmed in Montana's Paradise Valley on the Yellowstone River; south of Bozeman on the Gallatin River and south of Big Timber on the Boulder River. In 1998, Robert Redford returned to Big Timber with "The Horse Whisperer."

Montana is ranked 4th in size, but 44th in population with 1,015,165 people living in Montana .... Yes, that is 1,015,165 people living in the whole state! Wide-open spaces anyone?

courtesy of Vital Grounds
Since forests cover approximately 25 percent of the state and Montana has the largest grizzly bear population in the lower 48 states, I've included them in my block along with the state flower, the Bitterroot, and stems of grain to represent our economy.  With a 1/3 of our great state covered in mountains, that leaves the remaining 2/3 area covered with plains and grassy ranges and provides area needed for supporting Montana's economy which is primarily based on agriculture, including ranching and cereal grain farming.

With this wealth of information, I attempted to make my block represent the whole state ... mountains in the west, plains in the east, river waters in between and topped by our great big sky:

So there you have it, my representation of the State of Montana in one 6 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch block.

My thanks to Clothworks and American Made Brand Cottons for hosting this fantastic tour of our United States.

Clothworks is generously sending one Why-Knot-Kwilt commentor eight fat quarters from the
American Made Brand Cotton Solids!
Grown and Made all right here in the
Good Ol' USA!!

In addition, I am hosting a second giveaway for my wonderful international visitors.

Those of you from outside of the United States have a chance to win this bundle of 5 1/2 inch squares:

which I cut from the remaining Clothworks American Made Brand Cotton Solids not used in my block.

If you wish to enter the giveaways, please leave me a comment on this post, with the following information:

1) which country you reside;
2) where you live in your country of residence; and most important;
3) make sure I can contact you!

If I cannot contact you,
you will not be able to win.

Drawing will close on Friday, June 20th.

Please be sure to visit Bloomin’ Workshop who is sharing the State of Washington with us today.

Hope you enjoyed this brief tour of the state I've called home for the past 33 years. When my day is at an end, I have to admit...

 it is a pretty beautiful place to call home.

Until next we visit, happy hopping ~

Teacher Gifts & AMB Week 4

Yet another school year ends for my girls this week... and I ponder the idea of teacher gifts ...

How do you show your children's teacher how much you appreciate them without adding to a pile of things they don't need or want?

Well, I don't know the answer to that question, but I did decide on this Saturday Market bag pattern by Heather Bailey

Since I figured teachers usually have a pile of paperwork or lots of books to carry, what better way to help them with their loads than a bag to carry it all?

If you haven't tried this pattern by Heather, it is worth your time... I made both of these bags in one day ...
Saturday to be exact ...
how appropriate right?
{{silly grin}}

And since I spent the rest of my weekend to this point starting and finishing the book Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins ... good read by the way if you've seen the first two movies ... I do believe I hear my bicycle calling me to hit the road and stretch some muscles before I get back to my sewing room to finish work on my American Made Brand block which I am scheduled to share with everyone on Monday, June 16th.  So please be sure to come back for a visit as there will be a giveaway of fantastic fabrics!

Until then, please be sure to visit this week's blog stops along the American Made Brand tour for fabulous blocks, terrific shares and giveaway chances:

easy & delicious sugar cookie bars {recipe}

I've been waiting for an event to make these amazing sugar cookie bars for so I could post the recipe since I cannot be trusted with a whole pan of these in my house! My darling niece was baptized this weekend, so I offered to bring a dessert. This dessert. The easiest, most delicious sugar cookie dessert ever. Without all the rolling, cutting, frosting that make regular sugar cookies an ordeal. My mom's to-die-for sugar cookie bars.

After mixing a few ingredients together, you simply spread the dough out in a jelly roll pan and bake them. Then frost the entire pan and cut into squares. How much easier does it get? I added little sour cherry balls to this batch, but they are just as pretty alone with soft pink frosting.

Sugar Cookie Bars Recipe

1 cup butter, room temperature
8 oz. cream cheese, room temperature
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cream the butter, cream cheese, vanilla, almond extract, sugar, and egg until well mixed. Add the flour and baking powder and mix well. Spread in a greased jelly roll pan (or deep cookie sheet). Bake for 16-20 minutes. Do not brown. I usually take mine out at 18 minutes, but oven temps will vary, so begin checking at about 16 minutes. Cool completely, then frost.

Sugar Cookie Frosting Recipe

2 lbs. powdered sugar
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
1 tsp. almond extract
5 oz. can evaporated milk

Mix powdered sugar, butter, almond extract, and about half the can of evaporated milk. Add more milk until frosting is desired consistency. Add food coloring and mix until frosting is desired shade.

To make them a little prettier and easier to serve, I put each bar in a cupcake liner. I found these darling liners at Michael's. To make the most of their pretty design, I employed this little trick.

Turn the cupcake cup upside down. Press in the middle to turn it inside out. Then set your cookie bar on top.

Pin this recipe now--you will be so glad you did the next time you're asked to bring a dessert to an event! These sugar cookie bars are my go-to dessert for not only a big crowd (they go a long way!), but also when I need to travel. Leave them in the pan and they will still look beautiful when you arrive at your party. Be prepared to share the recipe when you serve them!

Don't miss these other delicious dessert recipes that are perfect for picnics and parties!
